Scientific research carried out in St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University make up a significant part of its activity. The structure of the University research activity is oriented at making the cycle “fundamental research – applied research – industrial manufacturing” shorter.

Research interests of the University cover spheres as diverse as:

  • Nuclear physics, condensed state physics, plasma physics and controlled nuclear fusion, high-temperature superconductivity, radio physics and electronics, physicochemical basics of life system organization, medical physics and engineering.
  • Power engineering, environment protection and support, balanced consuming of natural resources, municipal economy systems and life support.
  • Computing, control and cybernetics, robotics and flexible computer systems, telecommunication systems.
  • Mechanics, machine-building, design materials and new machinery and equipment materials, physicochemical basics of metallurgic processes.
  • Economics and Finances, management and marketing, human arts and engineering education liberation.

General management and coordination of the university research activity is being done by Acting Vice-Rector for Perspective Projects Aleksey I. Borovkov.

The following research centers were founded within the structure of the University: Power Engineering Institute of the Academy of Science, The Central Boiler Turbine Institute, Hydroengineering Research Institute, "Impulse" Design Office, Central Research Institute of Robotics and Technical Cybernetics.

In 1992 a new self sufficient structural unit was introduced - a research-and-production group - aiming to coordinate research conducted by the University faculty and departments and to provide technical support.

Research Institute for Power Engineering, Ecology and Nanobiotechnologies

The Institute works in the following fields:

  • Development of programs for well-rounded energy-environment events which will be optimal for energy-saving and local environmental situation
  • Technology services, transfer and commercialization of research results, organization of pilot and short-run production of pilot equipment lines
  • Research work with students, advanced training and professional re-training of personnel

The Institute has:

Applied ecology and construction department, including the laboratories of:

  • Bioenergy technologies
  • Energy-environment technologies in construction
  • Marine engineering and technologies
  • Industrial wastes and water treatment (clear water center)

Energy-efficient technologies, including the laboratories of:

  • Heat and power technologies
  • Electric power technologies
  • Energy-environment research
  • Renewable power sources

Department of energy-efficient technologies is a structural department of the Research Institute for Power Engineering, Ecology and Nanobiotechnologies. It deals with energy audit and energy-saving technologies:

  • Energy examination including quality and quantity energy waste testing in thermal and electric networks, residential and industrial buildings and constructions, plants and other energy-consuming objects
  • Analysis of the results and working out of energy consumption recommendations
  • Evaluation of energy-saving potential while new technologies and energy-efficient equipment adoption
  • Development of technical specification for energy-saving technologies
  • Development of the energy-passport of the enterprise

The department has all the necessary licenses and certificates and the most up-to-date equipment including mobile laboratories.

Central Research Institute of Robotics and Technical Cybernetics

The basic directions of the Institute activity are a robotics and control systems, the photon techniques, special instrument making, laser technologies, telenetics.

Institute carries out research of new methods of management and data transmission for improvement of quality of information appendices work spent within the framework of the program of creation of a national computer network for a science and high-speed computer network of new generation, the Internet III, intergrated in a world global network. The new generation of scientific development is created in the field of modern high-speed telecommunication systems and networks.
