Leningrad Region has been successfully implementing big investment projects. Besides some traditional projects in industry, transport and agriculture, Leningrad Region also successfully implements other investment projects in the fields of machine building, construction, food industry and transport, commercial real estate.
In the past few years Leningrad Region has actively expanded investment relations with foreign countries. Below is the overview of the latest investment projects carried out jointly with major international companies:
Philip Morris, one of the largest tobacco manufacturers in the world, has built cigarettes factory with $300 mln volume of investment and increased its investment to $630 mln.
The world-known company Ford has built a car plant with $150 mln investment. At the first project phase the project capacity of the plant was 25 thousand cars per year, and by the end of 2007 the plant capacities were increased up to 83 thousand cars per year. The company is intending to further expand the plant – by the end of 2011 its capacity will be increased up to 125 thousand cars per year.
Nokian Tires is also increasing production capacity. In 2005 they built a car tires plant in Vsevolzhsky area, with the project capacity of 1 mln tires per year. By the end of 2007 the plant had capacity of 10 mln tires per year. The planned investment is about 400 mln euro.
Kraft Foods is also revving up their capacities. The company is the world largest producer of packaged food products. The project for packing of coffee with about $20 mln investment being successfully implemented and increasing market for mainly instant freeze-dried coffee urged the company to build a freeze-dried coffee and coffee mixes plant in Leningrad region. Today this plant with about $100 mln investment is already built and working. The project capacity is 5 000 tons per year with increasing tendency.
International Paper is the world leading manufacturer of paper and wood processing products. They invested more than $150 mln in upgrading of Svetogorsk pulp and paper plant and built a plant for fine processing of aspen wood. The plant produces bleached chemical and thermomechanical pulp used for cardboard and high quality paper production. The investment in this project amounts to $190 mln, the project capacity is 180 000 tons per year.
Leningrad Region pays specific attention to mobilization of investment in timber industry. In Boksitogorsky area the largest Austrian timber company Mayr-Melnhof carried out the project for construction of sawmill with more than $110 mln investment. In Podporozhsky area Metsä-Botnia (part of the large Finnish concern UPM-Kymmene) built a powerful timber plant. The investment in the project is $70 mln.
