The present scientific and innovation potential of Komi Republic is represented by an extensive network of scientific and educational organizations, highly-qualified staff, large and small innovation organizations. There is a wide range of scientific and innovative developments in various branches of region’s economy.
One can observe stable growth of innovative goods, activities, services rendered by organizations dealing with mining operations, generation and distribution of electric energy, gas and water, processing industries.
Innovation policy of the Government of Komi Republic is oriented towards stimulation of innovation activities and development of the regional innovative system. The laws "On state support of innovation activities in Komi Republic” and "On the procedure and conditions of rendering different forms of state support of innovation activities in Komi Republic” have been adopted.
The Strategy of economic and social development of Komi Republic up to 2020 defines priority trends for innovation and R&D:

The republican target program “On development of scientific and innovation activities in Komi Republic in 2010–2012” stipulates a set of actions aimed at:

assistance in introduction of innovations to the republican economy and social sphere
The republican target program stipulates subsidizing of the objects of innovation activities to compensate for their expenditures on creation and development of infrastructure for innovation support.
State support of scientific and research activities in Komi Republic is provided in the following forms:
co-financing of scientific projects within the frameworks of agreements concluded between the Government of Komi Republic and The Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) or The Russian Humanitarian Scientific Fundation
development of a list of topics for scientific research financed from the republican budget
awarding prizes of the Government of Komi Republic for scientific research to the academic and teaching staff, students and postgraduates
The new measures of state support of innovation activities, now being worked out by the Government, will include improvement of regional legislation on granting tax rebates to the subjects of innovation activities and working out proposals on state support for creation of small and medium-size enterprises on the basis of universities and institutes.
Scientific sector of Komi Republic is represented by 75 organizations, including 24 large and medium-size scientific organizations and 51 small businesses.
Academic research is carried out at Komi Research Center of the Ural Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, which comprises 6 Institutes engaged with research in Biology, Geology, Linguistics, Literature and History, Physiology, Chemistry, Social-Economic and Energetic problems of the North - and also includes Vylgortskaya scientific experimental biological station.
