Novosibirsk researchers develop reactor to create human organs in space

Scientists in Siberia’s Novosibirsk are developing a reactor that is expected to help create biological and chemical materials with brand new properties, including human organs and tissues, in outer space, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reports.

RIA quoted Yuri Ramazanov, the CEO of the Center for Vortex Technologies developing the reactor, as saying that a prototype system has been tested, providing evidence that the processes can be implemented in a state of weightlessness.

He explained that the new reactor to generate biotech processes in outer space draws on the well-known tornado principle. Stem cells or microparticles are mixed inside the unit by an air vortex, thus giving rise to biological and other objects. Weightlessness is believed to allow even and steady growth of tissues and organs in all directions.

The new technology is thought to help create in space some materials that cannot be possibly created on our planet. In addition, it could produce a new means of processing waste on space stations.

According to Mr. Ramazanov, the reactor will be rigorously tested in the second half of 2013. “If all goes well, we will fine-tune the unit and seek an investor. So far, we’ve had only one investor, Tatcheminvest-Holding [from Tatarstan in the mid-Volga area], which has put up $31,250,” he said.
